Great news! Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn earns the prestigious Platinum 5 Leaf Status by Audubon International, the highest Eco Lodging rating in North America. Only 6 properies in the USA have achieved this status.

This award is reserved only for properties who have met stringent guidelines in energy conservation, natural resource preservation, guest education and outreach.

Advice to Adirondack lodging properties from Nicole Brownell, marketing director and owner of Gauthier's: "Going  green is good business. There's absolutely no doubt: we save money and attract more guests. Our overall bills have dropped significantly, and ADR, rev par, and occupany are up. Guests comment that they specifically stay here because they appreciate our environmentally responsible initiatives."

"The Adirondacks enjoy a very long history of environmental leadership and vision, beginning with the establishment of the Park in 1892," said James B. McKenna, president of the Lake Placid-based Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism. "The protection of our natural resources works unquestionably to our benefit as a visitor destination, and the fact that three of the highest rated eco-sustainable properties in the country can be found here in the Adirondack Park further positions the region as a world leader in environmental responsibility."

I'm currently in the 'Coolest' place in the Adirondacks....which is the double extended slogan for Saranac Lake. As I've found, the Adirondacks can be a bit confusing. For example, I'm staying in Saranac Lake (the town) at Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn, and my wonderful lake view accommodations...they actually overlook Lake Flower. In any event, I feel as though I'm staying on a houseboat, that's how close my room is to the lake. It's pretty awesome to wake up to this view each morning!

Came to stay here during our snowboarding trip to Whiteface. The staff is all very friendly and accommodating. There is free coffee + tea from 730am - 10pm. In the summer, the staying price includes all the boat/kayak/canoe rentals and swimming. The beds are ridiculously comfortable!

Gauthier'sSARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn in Saranac Lake, New York is the recipient of the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association's (NYSH&TA) 2012 Good Earthkeeping award. The inn will be recognized at the Association's 2012 Stars of the Industry Gala & Awards Banquet at the Hotel Albany, an affiliate of Hilton (formerly the Crowne Plaza Albany) on Monday, March 5.

The Stars of the Industry awards program honors employees of the hotels, motels and tourism-related businesses throughout the state who best represent the quality service and spirit of the hospitality and tourism industry.

"Every year, the state's hospitality industry nominates its most outstanding properties. After reviewing all of the nominations submitted, the judges agreed that Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn was the best of the best," said NYSH&TA President Jan Marie Chesterton. "All the winners of this year's awards are STARS in every sense of the word and shining examples of what New York State hospitality is all about."

The Good Earthkeeping award recognizes a property that has developed a culture toward integrating superior environmental management practices.

Since 2009, the Owners of Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn – Nicole, Danny and Doug Brownell – have been committed to implementing measures at their property to help protect and sustain the environment, as well as provide exceptional experiences for their guests.

"We've made it our mission to reduce our environmental imprint," said Nicole Brownell, Director of Marketing and Owner of Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn. "We didn't intend on being recognized for our 'green' efforts at the statewide level, but we are absolutely ecstatic that we won this year's Good Earthkeeping award. We're just trying to do our part for the environment."

"It is our natural resources; the clear water, fresh air and scenic views that make the Adirondacks a unique and special destination," said James McKenna, president of the Lake Placid-based Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism. "We congratulate the Brownell's on a well-deserved honor. They take seriously their roles as green leaders, and recognize the importance of proactive environmental responsibility in support of preserving our pristine region."

Stayed only one night, but could have stayed forever. Very clean and comfortable room. The owners/staff were beyond helpful.

The weather was rainy and cold so I was not able to take advantage of much of the activities outside, but they have kayaks, canoes, paddle-boats, fishing poles and other items all for use. The location is near restaurants and stores if you need to venture out. There are Adirondack chairs all over as well so there is plenty of room to sit, relax and enjoy the views.

The room was spotless and the bedding was amazingly comfortable. If I could have put the bed in my van, I would have. :-) The bathroom was small, but very nice and the complimentary toiletries were great. I forgot my shampoo/conditioner and used the ones they provided. I am now I am on a hunt to find where I can buy them because they were excellent. The room also has a small fridge, table and chairs and small closet.

The owners and staff seem to take great pride in this place and it shows. I travel for business often and am always looking for little gems like this. I wholeheartedly recommend it and will definitely be staying in the future.

An Eco-friendly, Affordable Adirondack Getaway:

When we stayed at Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn this past June, we stayed in a Deluxe Lakefront Double room located steps from Lake Flower on a private waterfront. Spacious and clean, the room offered a quiet, peaceful respite from everyday life–for us, a perfect and much needed getaway. We'd also be selling the Inn short if we didn't mention its absolutely terrific lake view. Our room, located on the ground floor, had a large window which peered out over Lake Flower; just outside of the room, lawn chairs were set against the shore (rooms on the 2nd floor have balconies), providing a great setting for us to sit back, relax and soak up some sun, while enjoying the stunning lake and mountain views.
The Inn also provides kayaks, canoes and a paddle boat to guests, to use on the lake free of charge. With a few hours to kill, we decided to take a couple kayaks out; finding the lake practically empty (Dan told us it's often like that), we enjoyed a couple hours feeling like we had the whole lake to ourselves, without competing with motorboats and jetskis. Lake Flower also has some fun areas in it to explore; its various nooks and crannies bloom some pretty cool flowers–hence the name of the lake.

We decided to shop down town, enjoy a romantic dinner and sit on our balcony to enjoy the breath-taking view of Saranac Lake. The sunset was amazing yet quick. It seemed as if you would miss it completely if you blinked. It was all I could do to get my phone out and get these pictures!

My base of operations was Gauthier's Saranac Lake Inn situated on the shore of Lake Flower ... All the staff seemed to genuinely want to make guests feel right at home and enjoy their stay. They went out of their way to provide information on where to go, what to do and where to eat to all their guests.

An old-school motel retrofitted with comfy beds and organic Tima linens — turns out the owners, two 30-something brothers named Doug and Dan Brownell, along with Doug's wife, Nicole, have won the Audubon Platinum eco-status for their place.

I would like to first say THANK YOU to the entire staff at the Saranac Lake Inn on Lake Flower. We had stayed for 6 nights and wish we could of stayed more. The excellent staff made us feel like family. We felt right at home! We used everything the motel had to offered during our trip, The pool, free wifi, canoes, kayaks, paddel boats, basketball hoop, free games for the kids at the registration desk, sidewalk chalk was allowed for the kids to have some fun, they even ofered to start a fire so we could make smores for the kids, I was even able to pick there brain about the hot fishing spots on Lake Flower and did very well fishing. My Family and I have never been to this part of the state before and now they have us for life, this will be the only place we stay every year.

To start, Gauthier's is ON the Lake.  The amenities were plentiful. Canoes, kayaks, & paddle boats are all free no matter what room you stay in. If I needed anything all I had to do was ask and the owners were extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The rooms and beds were great and it looked as tho the bathroom was renovated very recently. The shower was really refreshing after a long day of kayaking and I seriously want to change my shower head at home with one of theirs.

When I am on vacation, I tend to not stay a lot of my time in the room of where I stay. If I wanted that then I would just book a hotel room at the holiday Inn in Bangor. Its great that Gauthier's is not in Lake Placid but only 6 minutes away is very convenient. It can become very cramped in Lake Placid!

My girlfriend and I enjoyed the hospitality that the owners and Nicole showed us. Showed us the same respect as if a neighbor had invited us over for dinner. With the pristine setting, Gauthier's has the greatest location in Saranac Lake by far.

Have stayed at Gauthier's several times and love the corner single room with one queen bed. You can see the mountains and the lake; private and comfortable. Love to ski at Whiteface. Drive is only 8 miles to Lake Placid where the prices to stay and eat are MUCH higher. Also, this is a great place for families--kids can canoe or paddleboat right from the shore of the motel property.
